ABOUT CASIEN PRINTING
While the process is similar, the look of a Casein Bichromate print and a Gum Bichromate print is quite different. It uses curdled milk to bind the light sensitive materials instead of gum arabic. Casein printing is subtle and more forgiving but like gum bichromate printing the translucency of each color coating creates a new hue in each layer of emulsion.

HISTORY OF CASIEN
It was patented in 1908 by Neue Photographishe Gesellschaft as a technique to use with other photo-printmaking methods, such as salt prints and Van Dyke brown printing.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
There is a high degree of artist control in this beautiful print making process.
During the workshop you will create a number of images. The following issues and many others will be covered:

  • CMYK negatives for control of colour and contrast
  • Alignment or registration of negatives
  • Ways of coating the paper
  • Different colour pigments that can be used
  • How to build up and control colour during processing

ABOUT ELLIE YOUNG:
In 2000 Ellie attained the National Gallery of Victoria Trustee Award 2000 for her work in Gum Bichromate printing. Since 1994 she has been practicing and studying the art craft and science, of ‘alternative’ photographic processes. Ellie conducts workshops in a number of alternative processes mainly in her studios, but also teaches these processes in collages and institutes around Australia. After some years of research, her Salt Printing Manual is due to be released in 2010. She constantly exhibits selling her work nationally and internationally.
