ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This 2-day class is suitable for both newcomers to the process and established Lith printers, although some basic darkroom experience is required.
This is an opportunity to learn the delicate and beautiful art of Lith printing. This process has nothing to do with Lith negatives, line work or other graphics applications. Instead, it is a very creative and expressive form of interpretative printing using ‘normal’ negatives and black & white papers and may significantly expand your artistic & creative capabilities.
ABOUT THE LITH PRINT
Lith Prints are typically very warm-toned prints with a unique combination of wonderfully subtle low contrast properties in the highlights, warm mid-tones, and high contrast colder tones in the shadows. However, it is an extremely flexible process and many variations may be wrought between highly graphic and softly ethereal interpretations. Lith prints tone exceptionally well, in selenium and gold toners in particular.
THE LITH PRINT HISTORY
Lith printing is probably a relatively ‘new’ process in historical terms. The history of lith printing is not clearly documented however, but searches through the literature have shown examples of what look like lith prints from the late 1960’s and these were generally referred to as Kodalith prints – although no distinction appears to have been drawn between Kodalith developer, which is essential for what are now known as Lith prints, and Kodalith paper in normal developer. Earlier prints with a similar appearance have been noted but without process identification. The term lith printing seems to have emerged in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. Little was written in depth about Lith printing however until Tim Rudman’s first book on the process, which fully explained both the chemistry behind it and the practical aspects of how to control what had previously been described as an unpredictable process.
ABOUT TIM RUDMAN
Tim is well known internationally as a photographer, printer and authority on darkroom printing techniques, and notably for his pioneering work in the beautiful process of Lith Printing. He is a regular writer and lecturer and has conducted workshops on printing and toning techniques in Britain, Ireland, Spain, Australia, Canada and America.
As well as publishing several hundred articles on photography and printing, Tim has authored four critically acclaimed books on darkroom printing skills. The first, 'The Photographer’s Master Printing Course', was an instant best seller. This was followed by 'The Master Photographer’s Lith Printing Course', 'The Photographer’s Toning Book-A Definitive Guide' and 'The World of Lith Printing'. More about Tim
