Karl Koenig

This is Karl's 3rd visit to Australia, invited each time to conduct his extremely popular gumoil workshops at gold street studios. He has been successfully exhibiting his work in Australia since 2003, now represented by Meyer Gallery in Sydney.

After a career in academic psychology at Stanford and the University of New Mexico, followed by several years in private practice, Karl changed course and pursued different interests: art and photography. He studied lithography, silkscreen and and non-silver photography for three years. 

In 1990, Karl created a new ‘alternative process’ called polychromatic gumoil photography.  He published a book and several articles on the discovery and found himself giving university lectures, demonstrations, leading workshops and exhibiting work worldwide based on this process.

Chris Reid

Chris Reid is the director of Blanco Negro Custom Black & White Pro Lab and has been printing since 1989. His passion for black and white printing and darkroom skills shows in the quality of his work.

He is in high demand from both commercial photographers and the photographic artist. His work for photographic artists is seen in many galleries across Australia including the National Gallery of NSW.

With a unique way of imparting knowledge, Chris tailors his teaching to match the needs of each individual.

Nationally Chris is well known as a printer with authority on darkroom printing techniques and a deep passion in many of the alternative process techniques.

Tim Rudman

He is well known internationally as a photographer, printer and authority on darkroom printing techniques, and notably for his pioneering work in the beautiful process of Lith Printing. He is a regular writer and lecturer and has conducted workshops on printing and toning techniques in Britain, Ireland, Spain, Australia, Canada and America.


As well as publishing several hundred articles on photography and printing, Tim has authored four critically acclaimed books on darkroom printing skills. The first, 'The Photographer’s Master Printing Course', was an instant best seller. This was followed by 'The Master Photographer’s Lith Printing Course', 'The Photographer’s Toning Book-A Definitive Guide' and 'The World of Lith Printing'.

Tim is a member of the Arena group of photographers, a member and past chairman of The London Salon of Photography, and is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and an Honorary Life Fellow of the British Professional Photographer’s Associates.

His work has been widely exhibited in over 25 countries, receiving numerous international awards and is held in several permanent and private collections internationally. He is represented in London by Hoopers Gallery.

Tim Rudman qualified in medicine and surgery in the late 1960’s and for many years pursued both his two loves of medicine and photography, but now devotes his time to photography.

Gale Spring

Gale has a simple and direct way of teaching with a unique sensitivity to the needs of students. He is generous in his sharing of knowledge, which comes with a touch of his own style of humour.

Associate Professor Gale Spring has an extensive background in aspects of biomedical and forensic photography, but he has also been involved in other aspects of photography from commercial to fine art.
Originally from the United States, Gale has lived and worked in Melbourne since 1988 and holds dual American and Australian citizenship.
From 1976 to 1987, he was the Director of Photographic Services in the Department of Pathology at The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCD) in Dallas, Texas.

From 1988 to 2007, Associate Professor Spring was the Program Leader of the Scientific Photography degree program at RMIT University. He continues to organize and conduct many workshops in medical, scientific and forensic photography.

Today he is the Program Leader of the B.Sc. Applied Science degree and the post-graduate program in scientific photography, including alternative and historic processes in the School of Applied Sciences.
Gale has published numerous articles in various journals including the Alternative Law Journal and Australasian Science and the Journal of BioCommunication.

David Tatnall

David Tatnall has a style of teaching that makes students feel comfortable at all levels. The in depth knowledge he has acquired after 30 years in his fields of expertise is openly and passionately shared with all his students.

He has photographed landscapes in Australia, Nepal, India, Bolivia, Peru, Cambodia and Antarctica.

David's work is held in the National Gallery of Victoria, the State Library of Victoria, the Monash Gallery of Art, and many regional galleries and private collections throughout Australia.

Four large works are on permanent exhibition in the Australian Embassy in Washington, USA.

A collection of his large format portraits of young Melbourne artists are held in the collection of the City of Melbourne and the Australian Counsel General, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

David has been awarded a Life Time Contribution Award by Parks Victoria, and an Honorary Life Membership of the Victorian National Parks Association for is lasting influence on nature conservation in Victoria through photography.

 

Mike Ware

Mike Ware is known for his generosity in sharing his substantial knowledge of the above processes. He is an internationally recognized authority on the science, history and art of alternative photographic processes. His work on printing in noble metals such as platinum and gold has gained him several awards, including the Richard Farrand Memorial Award from the British Institute of Professional Photographers (1991).

Following an academic career in chemistry, Mike has been independently committed since 1992 to studying the history, science, and art of ‘alternative’ photographic processes, especially siderotypes - those based on iron photochemistry.

He has supervised postgraduate research in photograph conservation, and acts as a consultant to major museums. He exhibits his personal photographic work, and conducts workshops, worldwide.

His research has appeared in over 50 publications in both the popular and academic literature, including four books.

Ellie Young

Ellie's studio provides a resource centre for photographic image makers, attracting local and international participants to experience and learn the art, craft and science of traditional, alternative and historic photographic processes from professional instructors.

Ellie herself instructs in a number of alternative processes in her studios and also in collages and institutes around Australia.

In 2000 Ellie attained the National Gallery of Victoria Trustee Award 2000 for her work in Gum Bichromate printing. After some years of research, her Salt Printing Manual is due to be released in 2009. She constantly exhibits her work locally, nationally and internationally.

Ellie's work is held in private collection internationally and in the State Library Victoria.

She is fellow and current president of IPT, a member of AICCM and on the council of BIFB.

Lynette Zeeng

Enrolled in art school with nothing but a second hand Mamiya twin lens and an insatiable love for photography Lynette launched her photography career - this now spans almost three decades. 
She has many years of experience as a commercial photographer, an accomplished university lecturer and is also a recognized photographic artist.  Lynette instills in her students’ the same passion for photography that helped launch her own career.   A longstanding and respected member of Australia’s photographic community, Lynette specializes in alternative processes, notably Polaroid transfers.  Her work has featured in a range of national and international publications achieving numerous awards for her commercial and personal artwork.
Australian flora is often the centerpiece of Lynette’s work; her images display a masterful, painterly quality with a unique use of colour and light.

Wayne Cosshall

Wayne's passion for photography and teaching comes across in his engaging, passionate and generous teaching style. He specialises in making the most complex of topics simple to understand.

A photographer since the age of 14, Wayne cut his teeth on astrophotography and then gradually came down to earth. His work now comprises a major passion for infrared photography, the landscape, macro, digital manipulation and computational photography.

Wayne has been teaching all his adult life. After almost twenty years of university teaching and research in the computer graphics area, Wayne branched out into teaching photography as well as digital image manipulation at various tertiary institutions. In parallel with this, Wayne wrote for and edited most of the leading Australian photography magazines and several US ones.

Wayne now divides his time between his personal photography, teaching workshops and publishing the leading Australian photography online magazine, Digital ImageMaker. His digital photography montages have been exhibited internationally. He is also working on his first photography book
