The two days of this workshop is designed for photographers who want to go beyond basic image making with lens-less pinhole cameras and ideal for for those looking to undertake a project or series using pinhole photography.

The workshop is based around a series of practical demonstrations out in the field and in studio settings. Sheet film and roll film pinhole cameras will be available to use. Film will be processed and proofed during the workshop.

Topics covered:

  • Undertaking projects or series using pinhole cameras
  • Managing and creatively working with pinhole cameras
  • Predicable results using pinhole cameras
  • Selecting materials to get desired results
  • Understanding limitations of lens-less photography
  • Printing options
  • Pinhole photography using studio lighting
  • Reciprocity factor
  • Scanning of negatives
  • Use of handheld light meters and downloadable apps

Participants are encouraged to bring their own pinhole cameras, tripods and light meters. Some sheet and roll film cameras kindly sponsored by Blanco Negro will be available during the workshop.

Pre-requisites:

  • Understanding of basic photographic principals.
  • Ability to use hand held light meter.
  • Understanding of film processing.
  • Experience or understanding of pinhole photography.

David Tatnall is a Melbourne based fine art photographer with more than twenty years of experience in pinhole photography. He exhibits nationally and internationally -  the most show recent show at the Monash Gallery of Art’s: Earth Matters – Contemporary Photographers In The Landscape.

The National Gallery of Victoria, State Library of Victoria, Monash Gallery of Art, Warrnambool Art Gallery have acquired Davids work and is found many private collections.
