Hand Colouring Photographs - Lynette Zeeng -1 day

Colour is personal and it can be interpreted any way you like. The tones, highlights and shadows, within the photograph appear through the photo oils or the medium of your choice to create a Fine Art Photo. A red rose can be yellow or blue or something completely unnatural. The artistic choice is only limited by your imagination.

You will be supplied with an image and material,  after a little practice you can try painting your own prints.

You will discover the power of colour to transform an image by using different techniques. Applying colour to your black and white original will add depth and realism to your image. To master hand painting photographs you should start with a good quality print on photographic paper preferably with not too much contrast.

It can be on fibre based or RC paper. Although gloss can be used  Matt or semi matt surface can offer better results . You may also use other archival processes such as cyanotypes,  platinum/palladium prints. Sepia or other toned images silver gelatin photographs can be used used.

Since photography was discovered in the 1830's photographs have been coloured by hand to make the photograph like the original scene. With the advent of colour film and digital photographic artists are looking for something more creative.
