ABOUT GUM BICHROMATE OVER CYANOTYPE:
Printing gum bichromate images over cyanotype creates totally permanent image. Gum bichromate over cyanotype adds colour creating a painterly effect. This process begins by creating a standard cyanotype print, and then an additional layer of a gum bichromate solution (containing gum arabic, pigment, and a dichromate) is applied and exposed using CMYK negatives to build the final image. The result is a unique print with a blue base and the ability to incorporate the artist’s chosen colours and style through the gum layers. It makes a wonderful base for many of the tones that gum bichromate can provide, in multiple layers controlling the image hue colour and contrast.
