Kallitypes – Ellie Young – 1 Day

ABOUT THE KALLITYPE PRINT:
Although often confused with Van Dyke Brown and Argerotypes it is more related to platinum and palladium printing in its evolution and tonal values. Due to this it was known as “the poor man’s platinum print”, when the image is toned in platinum or palladium the result is chemically close to a Platinotype. It is believed that many Kallitypes were passed off as true Platinotypes and remain in collections as so. Kallitypes have had a reputation over the years as having poor archival qualities and often fading. When properly cleared, Kallitypes are completely archivable and will not fade. The Kallitype can range from warm browns to blue black depending on the developer chosen.

THE KALLITYPE PRINT HISTORY
Patented in 1889 by W. W. J. Nico Kallitype name comes from Kalli meaning beautiful in Greek. Kallitype is a sideros or iron type process developed from Herschel discoveries in 1842.

This is a hands on workshop where the participants will produce a number of photographs. Outline of the Workshop:

1. The negative (includes instructions on creating digital negatives)

2. Paper choices

3. Coating methods

4. Exposure

5. Processing – different methods

All materials including lunch is provided – Starts at 9.30 am and concludes at 4.30 pm each day

All other materials including lunch is supplied: – bring an apron or lab coat or old comfortable clothing other materials including lunch is supplied, – wear old comfortable clothing
