HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAVURE

In 1852 Talbot invented the 1st photo etching method and screens critical for the development of photogravure. This was further developed by Karl Klic in 1879. Current photographic printmaking explores the use of metal and photopolymer plates.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHIC POLYMERGRAVURE

Photopolymer printmaking is printing from photosensitive plates that have been exposed in UV light and developed using water. The process is clean, easy and safe.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Photopolymer printmaking offers a safe simple alternative to etching plates with acids. During the two days you will learn how to create photographic prints with a range of tones and velvety dark areas. Working with photopolymer plates is wonderfully accessible and suitable for the beginner or the more advanced student. Printmaking experience is not necessary.

Course content:

• explanation of the photopolymer printmaking

• examples of prints will be discussed

• prepare positive films.

• paper preparation,

• exposure of test strips in UV unit

• explanation of the 21 step Stouffer Wedge to ascertain intensity of light of different UV units

• exposure, washout, post-exposure

• inking and printing intaglio plates

• inking and printing intaglio plates in different colours, incorporating a la poupee if time allows.

WHAT TO BRING

Several A6 digital files at 300dpi. You will be assisted to choose the most appropriate file for the process. Protective clothing is essential.

ABOUT DIANNE LONGLEY:

Dianne Longley is an artist who teaches printmaking Adelaide College of the Arts. In 1998 she published 'Printmaking with Photopolymer Plates' and runs workshops in printmaking and artist books in Australia, Japan and USA. She has exhibited widely, won numerous awards, presented at conferences in the UK, USA, & Australia.

Dianne completed her Masters Degree at Flinders University in 2000 and is currently enrolled in PhD studies at Australian National University
